And that will be my last tumble

Things I thought about tonight:
It’s strange how readily people declare themselves to be certain descriptor words; liberal, Christian, feminist, pro-life, creationist, Republican, socialist, atheist, foodie, nature-lover, artist, free-thinker. I don’t think anyone is any of these at essence. Whether due to inherent limits in communication (e.g., constraints of language, inability to express oneself fully, cultural circumstance, etc.) or disagreement amongst those who define the words with their lives, it is impossible to actually be any of these things. Attempt to define them in a group and you will be at war, because we have our own pre-conceptions about what it is to be X. Because of this, it’s impossible to define others by these labels.
We will still try, though, and spit at the people that call themselves things that are different from the the things we call ourselves. Human condition.

“Protocol No.9 on the decision of the Council relating to the implementation of Article 16(4) of the Treaty on European Union and Article 238(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union between 1 November 2014 and 31 March 2017 on the one hand, and as from 1 April 2017 on the other (2007)”
…is a dumb thing to name something.

How to win a culture war (and lose a generation) [LINK] →
Conservatives in the state—who you would think would be more opposed to tampering with constitutions—supported the amendment, and last night it passed. Religious leaders led the charge in support of the amendment, with 93-year-old Billy Graham taking out multiple ads in publications across the state supporting the measure.
As I watched my Facebook and Twitter feeds last night, the reaction among my friends fell into an imperfect but highly predictable pattern. Christians over 40 were celebrating. Christians under 40 were mourning. Reading through the comments, the same thought kept returning to my mind as occurred to me when I first saw that Billy Graham ad: You’re losing us.
[…]
My generation is tired of culture wars.
As much as blogs named after the person writing them freak me out, RHE is usually right on. This one is no exception. I was late to the game with this one—it’s been linked to Kingdom Come already—but it can’t hurt to put this message on yet another platform, no matter how insignificant this platform may be.

Happy almost Jesus-sky-traveling day!

But the church’s own witness should be understandable by the smallest child: we oppose violence in all its forms. And we do so because we reject domination. That means, the child will recognize, no abuse or beatings. That means, women will hear, no rape or violation or battering. That means, men will come to understand, no more male supremacy or war. That means, everyone will realize, no more degradation of the environment. We can affirm nonviolence without reservation because nonviolence is the way God’s domination-free order is coming.

Amazon is trying to sell me Rowan Williams books, Kid A, and Haribo gummies.
It’s frighteningly good at target marketing.

ShortFormBlog: Greece headed towards more elections after coalition talks fail →
- cause The Greek elections earlier this month, which were watched closely as a sign of how the public felt about austerity measures, were split very heavily, with once-obscure partiestaking big chunks of the votefrom established parties.
- effect With these new parties insisting that a coalition government repeal the unpopular austerity measures, it was tough to find common ground, and as a result, none of the parties could manage to form a coalition government.
- result “We are going again towards elections, in a few days, under very bad conditions,” Pasok leader Evangelos Venizelossaid after a meeting on Wednesday. If Greece can’t form a government, it will likely run out of money by July. source

The Greek public simply doesn’t know the ramifications of its actions with this last round of elections. It may have been an easy transition from the drachma to the euro; it will not be an easy transition the other way around. They are being sidetracked side issues while Greece hangs on the precipice. There are certain tragedies to democracy, and this will be one of them. Death by their own hand.

Chinese scientists achieve quantum teleportation over 60 miles [LINK] →
via Tech Review
Juan Yin at the University of Science and Technology of China in Shanghai, and a bunch of mates say they have teleported entangled photons over a distance of 97 kilometres across a lake in China.
That’s an impressive feat for several reasons. The trick these guys have perfected is to find a way to use a 1.3 Watt laser and some fancy optics to beam the light and receive it.
Welcome to the future, bros.

Psalms for all seasons: a contemporary psalter [LINK] →
via Faith + Theology
If your congregation sings only Hillsong choruses, then their emotional repertoire will be limited to about two different feelings (God-you-make-me-happy, and God-I’m-infatuated-with-you) – considerably less even than the emotional range of a normal adult person. It is why entire congregations sometimes seem strangely adolescent, or even infantile: they lack a proper emotional range, as well as a suitable adult vocabulary. But in the psalter one finds the entire range of human emotion and experience – a range that is vastly wider than the emotional capacity of any single human life.
Just to stick with Hillsong as an example: for a congregation to go from singing Hillsong to singing the psalter would be like seeing Shakespeare’s plays after you’ve only ever watched sitcoms – it would be a shock to discover that human beings can be so large, and that they come in so many different varieties. Nobody has ever felt the way Hamlet feels, or felt so much: that’s exactly what makes Hamlet important.
